Spring Ephemerals in the Forest
“Those who contemplate the beauty of the earth find reserves of strength that will endure as long as life lasts. There is something infinitely healing in the repeated refrains of nature — the assurance that dawn comes after night, and spring after winter.”
—Rachel Carson, Silent Spring
The fleeting interval in April to mid-May, after the snow has melted yet before the canopy of leaves overhead is fully deployed, is when many of our native woodland flowers find their brief moment in the sun. Spring ephemerals provide early pollen for insects. They are also delightful finds on an early spring walk in the woods. Here are some spring ephemerals found along Winnakee trails over the years.
