LANDOWNER WORKSHOPS

Gain valuable skills and insights to manage your woodland!

For over 35 years, Winnakee Land Trust has worked in partnership with private landowners to protect and sustainably manage some of the Hudson Valley’s most vulnerable lands, critical to our region’s environmental health.  Our forest management plans increase wildlife habitat for at risk species and improve forest resilience.  Please join us to learn skills you can use on your woodland!

UPCOMING WORKSHOPS

Special thanks to the New York Forest Owners Association for co-sponsoring our Fall 2025 landowner events with us. Since 1963, NYFOA’s mission has informed management of privately owned woodlands in New York State to promote, protect, represent, and serve the interests of woodland owners.

RECENT WORKSHOPS

CREATING A SILVICULTURE MANAGEMENT PLAN

Winnakee opened an important local forest in Hyde Park—donated to Winnakee in 2022, but not yet open to public—for a hands-on forest management workshop with landowners to learn about silviculture practices that can enhance their conservation goals.

At Robert’s Refuge, attendees learned about the regeneration challenges faced by most regional forests due to overabundant deer populations, invasives and pests and pathogens. Our Conservation Forester, Trevor Keough, demonstrated how to assess tree health and use simple data on tree vigor and quality to create a step-by-step plan for improving woodlands.

Winnakee recognizes that private landowners have a vital role to play in safeguarding our region’s landscapes and biodiversity. This program was one of many to come dedicated to empowering landowners to sustainably manage their land for our region’s future.

Forests Under Pressure: A Hike on Hunting and Conservation

On a guided hike at Winnakee’s Sister’s Hill Woods, we explored how conservation, hunting, and forestry work hand-in-hand to create healthier, more resilient forests. Led by our incredible environmental experts Todd Waldron and Jen Adams and seasoned hunter Alison Turowski, participants walked away with a deeper understanding of why deer management is essential for forest regeneration and how these practices can benefit both wildlife and landowners.  We’re grateful to our partners at the The New York Forest Owners Association (NYFOA) for co-sponsoring this event and helping us empower landowners.
