Signs of Spring at Vlei Marsh
WHERE: Vlei Marsh Preserve, 186 Vlei Road, Rhinebeck
WHEN: Saturday, April 18 from 10:00-11:30am
REGISTERJoin Winnakee naturalist Garrett Chisholm for a guided walk at Vlei Marsh as we explore the exciting signs of spring emerging across the landscape.
We will share clues to identify the species of tree buds emerging on maples, oaks, and other native trees as they prepare to leaf out after months of winter dormancy. We will listen for spring birds, both migratory species and year-round residents becoming more active as breeding season begins. We can enjoy the chorus of spring peepers and wood frogs among the woodland vernal pools that provide critical breeding habitat for amphibians. Along the forest floor, we will also search for spring ephemerals that take advantage of early sunlight before the tree canopy fills in, and which provide an important early food source for pollinators. If we are lucky, we may even see a baby beaver!
Throughout the walk, Garrett will share insights about awakening wildlife and seasonal changes in plants as the days grow longer days and temperatures warm. Participants will come away with a deeper appreciation for the subtle details that signal the changing season and the rich web of life that returns each spring at Vlei Marsh.
