Wonders of Winter at Vlei Marsh

The quiet of winter can be deceiving. Beneath the snow and bare branches, forests are still full of activity—much of it unseen. Join naturalist Garrett Chisholm for a guided winter walk exploring the hidden world of plants and animals during the coldest months. Along the trail, we’ll learn how to identify deciduous and coniferous trees and explore the important natural processes trees undergo between fall and their spring “awakening.”
We’ll search for signs of wildlife activity and explore the habitats that help animals survive the winter months. Garrett will offer insights into how this season provides opportunities to observe certain species, such as owls, which are often more hidden during warmer months. We may also encounter evidence of beaver, muskrats, porcupine and deer along the way.
Together, we’ll explore fascinating questions such as:
- How does snow affect wildlife foraging and shelter?
- Why do some deciduous trees hold their leaves through winter?
- Do wood frogs really freeze until spring?
- Where do turtles go when ponds ice over?
Along the way, you’ll learn about remarkable winter adaptations of plants and wildlife and gain a new appreciation for a season that’s far from dormant.
REGISTERParking at Vlei Marsh Preserve is limited: Carpooling is encouraged and appreciated. If the lot is full you may park on Vlei Road on the preserve side of the street.
