Can you detect a blue jay, blue bird or robin just by hearing their call? Distinguish a pileated woodpecker from a yellow-bellied sapsucker through the rhythm of their tree-trunk drumming? There’s no telling who we might find soaring, landing and paddling in Rhinebeck’s Vlei Marsh Preserve, 165-acres of forest and wetlands protected by the Winnakee Land Trust, but these birds and many others, including the Great Blue Heron, American Coot, Sora, Virginia Rail, Wood Duck, and Common Gallinule, call the property home.
Join Dr. Alan Peterson from the Ralph T. Waterman Bird Club, who will lead two sessions of an 1 1/2 hour walk-and-learn walk about the Preserve’s fascinating feathered species— their sounds, habits and migration patterns, as well as how to identify them.
This program is a co-presentation of Winnakee Land Trust, Dirty Gaia and Waterman Bird Club. WALK THE LAND is a collaboration between Dirty Gaia and Winnakee Land Trust featuring guided tours with local experts. Join us as we explore the ecosystem of Rhinebeck’s Vlei Marsh throughout the seasons from a variety of perspectives and experiences, revealing the diversity and wonder of the natural world.
