An Update on Northern Dutchess Trails
By Gregg Swanzey, Executive Director
Winnakee Land Trust is working with public and private partners to assemble two significant grant applications for NYS Parks Development funding for the Rhinebeck and Red Hook through the Consolidated Funding Application process offered by the State of New York. We are hoping this will infuse nearly $1 Million into the mix and energize some important trail initiatives.
The project for Rhinebeck will establish 6500’ of new trail linkages between the Rhinebeck Village Center and Thompson Mazzarella Park, trails at the Gardens, and beyond. It is the essential first phase for connection to the Empire State Trail as it enters Northern Dutchess County over the Kingston Rhinecliff Bridge.
The project for Red Hook has been dubbed the Saw Kill Link Trail with the goal of establishing more than 2.3 miles of new trails between the village of Red Hook and Bard as a critical step in realizing the V2V (village to village) vision connecting Red Hook to Tivoli.
The funding will provide for design, engineering and construction components along with all the permitting and required approvals resulting in a finished and cohesive trail network that will accommodate multi-modal non-motorized transportation alternatives serving bicyclers, walkers, runners, and equestrians of all ages. The trail surface will be item 4 stone dust over fabric and crushed stone at eight-foot-wide. It will be wide enough to reduce risk of ticks for trail users.
Thank you for your continued support of our work and I look forward to updating you in the future with more news on our progress!
